Waterproof Apple Watch 2 Could Feature GPS, Barometer, and Better Battery

apple-watchAccording to an analyst report, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is prepping to launch its second generation Apple Watch by the end of this year, with a slew of new features in tow.

KGI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is reporting that the Apple Watch 2 will include:

  • A faster redesigned TSMC built processor,
  • Built-in GPS (first-gen Apple Watches have to pair with an iPhone and piggyback on the phone’s GPS),
  • A barometer to measure air pressure changes,
  • A larger battery, and perhaps most impressively,
  • The device will be totally waterproof.

What won’t be changing, according to Kuo, is the watch’s display size or the device’s overall footprint. The new watch also will not yet feature data connectivity yet — that perk is planned to be introduced next year.

The analyst also expects a price cut coming soon on the original Apple Watch, which the company typically does just prior to, or in conjunction with, a product update.

While the watch hasn’t been the runaway success that Apple hoped for, it has outsold all other smartwatches to date. Apple Watch sales are slowing dramatically, however, plunging 55% in Q1 this year, no doubt putting pressure on the company to release a big update.

Speaking of updates, Apple is also expected to unveil a new iPhone this fall, allegedly dubbed the iPhone 7. The watch and phone will likely be announced at the same Apple event in September or October.

Apple shares were mostly flat in Monday morning trading at $107.53. AAPL has gained 2.12% year-to-date, trailing the performance of the S&P 500, which rose 7% in the same period.
