Weak US Employment Report Raises Red Flag on Economy (Thomas R.)

President Donald Trump in early May slapped additional tariffs of up to 25% on $200 billion of Chinese goods, which prompted retaliation by Beijing. Last week, Trump said he would impose a tariff on all goods from Mexico to force authorities in that country to stop immigrants from Central America from crossing the border into the United States.

Hong Kong March: Vast Protest of Extradition Bill Shows Fear of Eroding Freedoms (Sparky1)

The protest recalled the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement five years ago, which paralyzed several of the city’s main commercial districts but failed to persuade the government to make any concessions. Since then, China’s ruling Communist Party has been gradually exerting more influence over Hong Kong.

FDA and FTC Hit Vape Companies With Warnings Over Influencer Posts on Social Media (Thomas R.)

“Given the significant risk of addiction, the failure to disclose the presence of and risks associated with nicotine raises concerns that the social media postings could be unfair or likely to mislead consumers,” the letters read. “The FTC urges you to review your marketing, including endorsements by your social media influencers, and ensure that necessary and appropriate disclosures are made about the health risks of nicotine.”

Trump Defends ‘Beautiful’ Tariffs as a Negotiating Tactic (jdargis)

In the past month, the Trump administration has doubled down on its efforts to pressure its partners, largely because Mr. Trump knows he can impose tariffs unilaterally. Why You May Be Less Prepared for Retirement Than You Think (Thomas R.)

Of soon-to-be retirees aged 45 to 59, 42% say their retirement savings are on track, according to the Fed report. That sounds like great news, but there are two problems with this scenario. First, when asked what dollar amount these workers see as being “on track” for retirement, the response was $250,000. Second, despite nearly half of these workers claiming to be on track, only 27% actually had $250,000 or more saved for retirement.

How much does lithium cost? The industry can’t seem to agree (Thomas R.)

For now, the industry grabs on to whatever scuttlebutt it can find, with data swirling on prices for spodumene, a hard rock containing lithium; prices for hydroxide or carbonate, the two main types of lithium used in batteries; or prices paid by battery manufacturers across China, Japan and South Korea.

The Healing Power of Gardens: Oliver Sacks on the Psychological and Physiological Consolations of Nature (tmn)

I cannot say exactly how nature exerts its calming and organizing effects on our brains, but I have seen in my patients the restorative and healing powers of nature and gardens, even for those who are deeply disabled neurologically. In many cases, gardens and nature are more powerful than any medication.

How Safe Is Sunscreen? (jdargis)

The only proven health risk so far is too much sun exposure. Some may think covering up and limiting time in the sun is important only for those with lighter skin, but the recommendations against UV exposure apply to everyone.

Yes, you should probably keep using sunscreen, although some who may want to play it extra safe could switch to sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
