Bank of England releases new data on its gold vault holdings

 On its website, the Bank of England has just published new data on its website detailing
month-end gold custody holdings for gold held within its vaults. This data covers every month for the last 6 years i.e. from January 2012 to December 2016. Going forward, the Bank of England will publish updates to this data with a 3 month lag. The new gold vault data will be very useful for seeing the ebbs and flows of gold bars being held in the Bank of England’s network of gold vaults under its headquarters in the City of London. Both central banks and bullion banks hold gold accounts at the Bank of England. The fluctuations in the Bank of England’s gold holdings are probably more to do with bullion bank activity than central bank activity. The London Bullion Market Association was also expected to publish gold vault holdings data for the commercial gold vaults in London, but as of now, this data has not been published, for reasons unknown.
