Apple Officially Announces September 7 iPhone Event

iphoneIt’s official: Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) long-awaited iPhone event will be held a little more than a week from now, on September 7.

Press invitations were just sent out, indicating the 9/7 date at 10am Pacific at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

Investors can expect a new iPhone to be unveiled on that date, but conflicting details around the device abound. The consensus seems to think that the tentatively-named iPhone 7 will simply be another update to the iPhone 6, with the same exact body, screen, and other major details, except with a better camera, processor, and battery life.

That would mean that the next “big” upgrade to the iPhone lineup won’t come until next year.

Such news would almost surely disappoint investors, who’d love to see a revolutionary upgrade that helps push Apple’s waning smartphone market share back in the right direction.

An update to the Apple Watch will also likely be unveiled at the Sept. 7 event, but that upgrade might not be all that major, either. Sources indicate that like the iPhone, the new Apple Watch will have the exact same form factor, but perhaps include a GPS, barometer, and better battery this time around.

It’s possible but improbable that Apple would also announce an update to its aging MacBook lineup next month, but rumor is that the company will wait until October for that.

Something big — or maybe not that big — is happening next month, we know that much. We’ll all just have to wait and see what Apple has in store.

Apple shares were up slightly at $107.04 in Monday afternoon trading. AAPL has risen 1.8% year-to-date, versus a 7% gain in the S&P 500 index during the same period.
